A recent Presidential Commission
on United States-Asia Pacific Trade and Investment Policy
identified the Asia-Pacific region as a number one
priority for U.S. trade strategy.
It
stated:
"The Asia
Pacific region is key to our international success. It is
the largest producing, the biggest trading, the most
populous, the fastest growing, and the most dynamic
region in the world. The United States has done well in
the region, our exports have increased nearly fourfold in
the last ten years. However, we could be doing a lot
better if we had the same access to Asia Pacific markets
as they have to ours."
